Joint Medical Examinations (JME)

A Joint Medical Examination (JME) is an independent medical assessment mutually requested by the TAC and the claimant’s legal representative to evaluate transport accident injuries.

What is a Joint Medical Examination?

A Joint Medical Examination is an independent medical assessment arranged by mutual agreement between the TAC and the claimant’s legal representative. JMEs are designed to assess injuries arising from transport accidents, with the aim of improving procedural efficiency, minimising duplication of assessments, and simplifying the overall claims process.

This mechanism was introduced through amendments to the Transport Accident Act 1986 in November 2013, with the intention of improving the experience for clients and reducing reliance on multiple Independent Medical Examinations.

Why JME's matter

The outcome of a JME plays a key role in determining the level of compensation awarded to an injured party. These assessments are conducted impartially and independently of both the claimant and the TAC, ensuring accuracy, fairness, and transparency in the evaluation process.

For claimants, the TAC prioritises a streamlined and fair experience, with JMEs reducing the number of assessments they need to attend while ensuring that medical evidence remains comprehensive and reliable.

All medical specialists are experienced in medico-legal reporting and adhere to expert witness codes of conduct and relevant jurisdictional guidelines. View Expert Witness Code of Conduct.
