An IME is an independent medical examination arranged by a third party such as an insurer, employer, or lawyer to get an objective opinion on a patient’s injury or condition.
As the examining practitioner, your role is to assess and report, not to treat. You review the patient’s history, examine them, and provide a written opinion that helps resolve disputes around compensation, treatment funding, or fitness for work.
In some cases, this extends to acting as a medical expert witness — providing independent, unbiased assistance to a Court on matters strictly within your area of expertise.
