DR ANDREW MUIR SUMMARY

Dr Andrew Muir is a leading pain management specialist based in Melbourne, dedicated to providing innovative and interventional solutions for chronic pain. Practising at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, he combines advanced medical techniques with a multidisciplinary approach to help patients achieve better pain control and improved quality of life.

Dr. Muir’s medical journey began at the University of Tasmania, where he earned his degree in 1983. Following this, he completed his residency and commenced his anaesthesia training at the Royal Hobart Hospital. His specialist training, which he completed in 1994, took him across internationally renowned institutions, including Leicester Infirmary, Oxford University Hospital, and major Melbourne hospitals such as St Vincent’s, The Royal Children’s, and The Royal Women’s. During this time, he also obtained a Master’s degree in Science (Pharmacology) from the University of London in 1990, further strengthening his expertise.

Recognising the growing need for specialised pain management, Dr. Muir pursued intensive training at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney from 1994 to 1997. In 1998, he returned to Melbourne to establish the Barbara Walker Centre for Pain Management, a pioneering multidisciplinary pain clinic at St Vincent’s Hospital, where he served as Director until 2008. That same year, he was also appointed Clinical Director of the Geelong Hospital Pain Clinic. In 1999 when he was awarded the Foundation Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.

He has played a key role in registrar training through the ANZCA teaching program for anaesthetists and has served as Supervisor of Training at the Barbara Walker Centre for Pain Management.
